Once Upon a Time…
There is a man, Mortimer (Brendan Fraser, The Mummy films, Journey to the Centre of the Earth) an ordinary man – or at least he thought he was. Mortimer is reading to his daughter – Meggie (Eliza Bennet, Nanny Mcphee) and his wife, Resa (Sienna Guillory) when strange things start happening. His wife disappears and characters of the book he is reading – Inkheart – come alive.
For nine years he and Meggie go around the world looking for the book – Inkheart – which he thinks is the cause of the disappearance of his beloved wife, Resa. One day he finally finds Inkheart in an old bookstore and he opens the book out of curiosity. However unexpectedly when he comes out of the store he finds one of the characters – Dustfinger and his meerkat pet (Gwen) – talking to his daughter. Dustfinger tries to persuade Mortimer to read the book out loud so he can go back to the book. But Silvertongue, the way Dustfinger calls Mortimer, made a promise to himself he would never read Inkheart out loud again after what happened to his wife.
Mortimer and his daughter go to Italy to Meggie’s aunt's – Elinor (Helen Mirren) - house to hide but Dustfinger reappears with Capricorn, another character of the book, and his gang destroying all of Elinor’s precious library. Making all three prisoners and bring them to an out of ordinary village plenty of characters, such as the Minotaur and flymonkeys, force Silvertongue to read books out loud so that more things would happen.
In my opinion Inkheart is an enjoyable adventure film which reminds me of Jumanji (Robbin Willians), in which all those strange creatures appear during the film, but Inkheart is better because it talks about books and makes you want to be part of it. E.g. Elinor says: “I’ve been to Persia, St. Petersburg, Paris, Middle Earth, distant planets and Shangri-la without even having to leave this room”.
In addition, the film is well played by almost all the characters; an exception is that Meggie’s mum's participation is poor, she is hidden for nearly all of the film and when she appears she doesn’t really appeal to me much.
Well, I hope all of you enjoy and see you on Tuesday
